Introducing Dr. Korie Leigh

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

It is indeed hard to fit all of Dr. Leigh's accolades onto a single page. Not only does the Certified Child Life Specialist, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, hold a PhD in Integral and Transpersonal Psychology and is herself a children's book author. She is also a Certified Thanatologist, Grief Counselor and Certified Compassionate Bereavement Care provider, specialising in the work with bereaved families after perinatal loss. Dr. Korie Leigh helps children and families develop resilience to cope with life’s most difficult experiences and will be authoring the tips and resources section for "The House in Ollie's Tummy".

Dr. Korie Leigh

In her clinical practice, Dr. Leigh counts on her 18 years of professional experience to fuse a variety of methods in meeting her clients where they are and walking with them to where they want to grow.

Her work draws from attachment theory, psychoanalytic psychology, child development, creative expression, thanatology studies and strengths-based approaches that recognise our inherent resilience.

Korie, in her own words

I've had more job titles than I can count and none of them come close to describing the depth of my experiences. If I could sum up these experiences I might say -

  • I’ve held the hand of a child who is at the end of life and helped them create a lasting legacy for their parents and siblings.

  • I’ve sat with the enormity of grief, the depth of despair, as a mother questions her identity after her only child dies.

  • I’ve held space for those who can’t find solace, comfort, or validation for their ambiguous losses.

  • I’ve fostered the development of resilience and coping strategies for children diagnosed with chronic illnesses and life-limiting illnesses.

  • I’ve supported those struggling with chronic pain and illness to take back their life one small step at a time.

  • I’ve cultivated a space for people to feel safe enough to explore their creativity, passions, and honour their true purpose.

I can’t fix the pain you are experiencing. But I can help you learn how to navigate through it.

Dr. Leigh's Role

Dr. Leigh has come on board to lend her immense repertoire of clinical and personal experiences as a counsellor, thanatologist and childhood grief and trauma expert to our project. We are beyond humbled to be working with Dr. Leigh and for "The House in Ollie's Tummy" to benefit from her valuable expertise.

Dr. Leigh will be independently reviewing and assessing the manuscript for "The House in Ollie's Tummy" in order to ensure its suitability for our intended audience and its appropriateness in the treatment of a sensitive and distressing topic.

Dr. Leigh will also be authoring the tips and resources section of our psychotherapeutic children's book. The back part of the book will be devoted to providing parents with a deeper psychological insight into grief processing in children, including their perception of and attitude towards death at different ages and common behavioural presentations of grief processing children may be exhibiting.

This section of the book is intended to educate and reassure parents about how children tend to process loss and death and give caregivers practical and useful tips for how they might approach supporting their children through this difficult time.

We are delighted to be working with Dr. Leigh on a project so close to our hearts and are confident that her sensitivity, experience and insights will make "The House in Ollie's Tummy" a better book.
