Helping families heal after baby loss
Welcome to our grief resource for
talking about pregnancy and baby loss with your kids
A Children's Book project by
about
Who
This project is run by registered grief support charity Possum Portraits, which supports families through perinatal bereavement
What
We are creating a picture book to help parents talk about grief & loss with their surviving children after experiencing bereavement
Why
Death, grief and loss are complex subjects even for adults. Our book helps parents broach and talk about deep feelings with their kids
How
Our book "The House in Ollie's Tummy" will be for sale nation-wide. 500 copies will be donated to hospitals & public libraries.
Why A Book?
Children's Books have a unique tool at their disposal: pictures. In a picture book, illustrations can communicate feelings, ideas and internal states without needing the story to use difficult words or make something intangible too explicit.
Especially when we are talking about complex subject matters like grief, loss and death, the picture book is a child-appropriate medium which can help make these issues more comprehensible.
AGENDA
Create
First up is writing and illustrating our book! We have the manuscript locked in and illustrations are under way. As this is an in-house production, we are ensuring that all proceeds from book sales come back to Possum Portraits.
utilise
A number of community events will be held around the country. These include book readings and Q&As with bereaved parents, focussing on how to use the book as a communication resource with their living children.
distribute
We will donate copies of our book to hospitals and public libraries in Australia. This way it is immediately available to parents who are newly bereaved, as well as to those whose bereavement occurred longer ago. Your donation will help fund these free copies!
Publish
Once manuscript and illustrations are locked in we envisage an initial print run of 2000 copies for "The House in Ollie's Tummy", published by Little Steps Publishing.
